  • ATCRyderX© - I've actually got a Green Switchback frame from back in the day sitting in my bike shed. I agree they were very well made and I shunned Mongooses even back before bicycle quality fell right off the wagon in the Mid 2000s. I want to make a Single Speed just in the front (like the middle front sprocket) and keep my gears in the back - Do people do that?
  • Chabito Cabronii - Hi Good Day! I'm planning to setup a street MTB is there a specific frame for that or any mountain bike frame can be converted into a street MTB? Thanks!
  • roberto dogliotti - russian rednecks
  • Reece Ford - For fucksake I was wanting to know how to convert to single speed not learn how fucking bikes were nade or how to maintain you bearings
  • senorcrab - Hey mongoosejake, nice job on that bike. I'm getting ready to start a single speed project bike and was wondering what gear ratio you used on this one. How many teeth on the front / rear?
  • Jeff Papineau - THINK Gears are nice, sometimes there are hills. Learn to fix your bike, respect the work people did in previous generations to put gears on bikes, learn how to fix them and think for yourself, instead of participating in fads and needing the respect of your peers to feel self worth.
  • Nathan Miller - I live around the corner from Tienshin - FSA factory - ha! I know some of big players there.
  • schlooonginator - Thank God, someone other than me who realizes the fact that Taiwan can and does produce very high quality gear. Soooo, many people seem to think they make junk like mainland China(not that its all junk but if you want it made for the absolute lowest price, thats where you go. I know this will change too). Taiwan is like S Korea and maybe shy of Japan on a purely general label. I like my pocket knives and one of my favorite companies is Spyderco, a US company with a factory in Golden CO, Japan and Taiwan. Guess where their highest quality knives are produced? Not the USA and not Japan but Taiwan! The Taiwan factory produces knives with absolute perfect fit and finish whereas the others you find little misses.
  • Nathan Miller - Roadie here in Taiwan - using a couple WTB saddles on my road bikes! Awesome stuff!
  • Dejan Zabaljac - I can just say...Well done bro for making that bike.No one wants to pedal with single speed these days, and that is well preserved frame and other parts.I had myself a Trek 6000 98` and i gave to my best man,and then we made a fixie from it. Belive me MTB are awesome for that things. Thank you for showing this video. :)
  • david floyd - where did you get your black brake cable guides??
  • mzondi1970 - I have a 2000 specialized rockhopper. I might do this to that bike
  • zippofani - Really nice build. I like it. MTB frames are rarely good looking, but with the right choice of colors, apparently it can be done really well. So now I'm off to strip/salvage my 1990 Miyata Trail Runner and try to build something similar.
  • Lance Cozad - Array
  • Everyone Relax - So, do you like MTB? Lol
  • swiftfilly3 - were can i get super cheap air/preload coil triple crown suspension
  • peter morrison - good stuff
  • Tdg0101 - Great video and narration, thanks
  • mongoosejake - For years I used: jensonusa pricepoint cambria bike blueskycycling You can sometimes find good deals on Ebay, pinkbike, and even Amazon but remember that even local shops run specials and can have good deals.
  • keithallenlaw - Nice bike...nice video. Thanks!
  • E hanson - Great vid. Where can I buy quality aftermarket mtb parts like these online??
  • Steve West - Hi mongoose jake, im doing a single speed for the trails, I have a 47 tooth crank in front, what teeth cog should I run in back? for a easy to peddle speed ride for on/off road use. thanks for your time stevie ;)
  • mongoosejake - I dont refuse Chinese products, but rather would choose something else when possible. If you cant understand the huge difference between (most) Chinese made and a Taiwanese product, then to be honest there's not enough room on these replies to explain other than to say that Taiwan QC is on the same level as US factories while China mostly doesnt attempt to equal either country for quality, but instead goes for lower cost of manufactoring... Not what is important to me quality is.
  • jerome96114 - But nice bike, I have to say ...
  • mongoosejake - Thanks, some of my favorite rides have been on this single speed over the last couple seasons!
  • Fred Eric - Nice work! Do u have a homepage with more details? I've lost my mongoose last summer ;-( Building a new SS! A Merida Dakar Superlight steelframe Would love to know where I find these extras you have on yours? Bless :-) Elfredo
  • mongoosejake - I can add: the single speed conversion parts (rear cog, cassette spacers, half shell guards) are Wheels Manufactoring pieces, and the Tensioner is a Origin8 model with a ceramic pulley. The FSA crank is a sale item from jensonusa and the MRP bashguard is from a LBS. I obviously love WTB parts, and you can still get the same grips and the Laser V saddle from most retailers, along with the Origin8 parts being available through most decent shops.
  • J Brisc - awesome
  • mongoosejake - I have mine set up as a 32 tooth front and 16 tooth rear, which works good for general trail riding. I'd go with an 18 or 20 tooth rear if your trail are heavy on climbing, or go to a 14 tooth if you need more top end speed.
  • mongoosejake - Thanks, it turned out well with the mix of parts.
  • jerome96114 - - Refuses a chinese product - Goes for a product from "taiwan" - Sees no problem with that ... Works for me ...
  • mongoosejake - No other page with extra details, but I can say that alot of the parts I used for this build were gathered over a number of years. The WTB Grease Guard wheelset, and headset are hard-to-find nowadays, and the Marzocchi is a older Z-5 100 air that is just rock solid reliable. The point was to show that with some patience and scavenging you can build a great SS for a low dollar amount. I've only got around $650 into this whole build, by buying sale items and using parts from my parts bins.
  • EscapeVelo - Nice build. Could you comment on the best gear ratios for a single speed like this? Number of teeth for the crank and rear cog.
  • mongoosejake - USA made, custom built bikes (Seven), or USA made limited production bikes (Intense or Ventana for example) are even better than Taiwanese mass production bikes (Mongoose, some Trek, Giant, Specialized) but the cost increases dramatically, in upwards of $2500-$3000 or more for the frame alone. Give me a huge disposable income and then I might own a couple of Moots and an Intense, but for me Mongoose gives good quality and great value!
  • Mike Wilson - i can build a SS mtb for less then $100. free is your best friend!
  • MjLee Wong - Array
