  • Paul Maguire - I've watched this through several times now and I get goosebumps every time. The anticipation builds beautifully with the soundtrack as we make our way through the Ice Fall, Western Cwm and up the Lhotse Face. As we traverse over the Geneva Spur and onto the South Col the sense of occasion is huge. With the final push into the death zone, up the exposed summit slopes I feel the grandeur and exhilaration all the more. Most of all though, what stands out is the seriousness of the situation the climbers are in until they can get back to the temporary safety of the South Col. I can only imagine that despite all the noise about commercial expeditions and sherpas dragging clients to the top, only people who are extremely strong, fit, experienced, determined, acclimatized and lucky make it up and down on the first attempt.

After years of climbing in my house shoes in my armchair, by reading the (excellent) books, this video brings imagery to the text depictions, and greatly enhances my enjoyment. (BTW, reading about high altitude climbing is most fascinating. Fiction is unnecessary; the true accounts provide hours of enjoyment. The book to start would be *No Shortcuts To To The Top,* by Viesturs.) Would love to see the same thing done for the other famous mountains, such as K2, Annapurna, and that (generally accepted) most difficult high mountain, Gasherbrum IV. Outstanding work, Grant; Most helpful! I subscribed!

  • Grant Rawlinson - Hi Szabi - thanks for the comment and glad you enjoy it. Its around 11 - 12km horizontal distance from BC to the summit on the South side. This is much shorter than the North ridge route which is over 20km of horizontal distance.
